🔙 Retour sur une visite enrichissante des élèves de la communauté de Kawawachikamach à Québec

Chers collaborateurs,

C’est avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme que nous vous partageons les moments forts d’une expérience inoubliable qui s’est déroulée en janvier dernier, dans le cadre du programme Chercheur d’un jour. Nous avons eu l’honneur d’accueillir cinq étudiants, accompagnés de leur enseignante de sciences et du proviseur de l’école Jimmy Sandy Memorial, venus tout droit de la communauté de Kawawachikamach. Ce séjour de trois jours leur a permis de découvrir le monde fascinant de la recherche scientifique au Centre de Recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval (CRCHU) et dans plusieurs laboratoires de l’Université Laval.

Le premier jour de leur visite a débuté par une immersion dans nos installations au CRCHU, où les élèves ont eu l’occasion d’explorer nos laboratoires de neurosciences ainsi que ceux spécialisés dans les biomatériaux et dispositifs biomédicaux. Cette première découverte a permis aux élèves de mieux comprendre les avancées technologiques et scientifiques dans le domaine de la recherche biomédicale. En après-midi, les jeunes ont travaillé sur leurs projets scientifiques en préparation pour l’Expo-Science Autochtone-Québec. Ils ont eu la chance d’être accompagnés dans divers laboratoires affiliés à l’Université Laval, tels que le Laboratoire de Radioécologie, dirigé par le Professeur Dominic Larivière, et l’Institut sur la Nutrition et les Aliments Fonctionnels (INAF). Ce fut un moment riche en apprentissage et en découvertes, qui a stimulé leur curiosité et leur passion pour les sciences.

Le deuxième jour a réservé aux élèves une rencontre privilégiée avec la sénatrice Michelle Audette, originaire de la communauté innue de Uashat mak Mani-utenam. Ils ont également pu échanger avec des étudiants issus de l’Association des Premiers Peuples de l’Université Laval, permettant ainsi un partage interculturel et des discussions enrichissantes autour de leurs parcours respectifs et de leurs expériences. Cette rencontre a été un véritable moment d’inspiration pour nos jeunes invités. Ensuite, ils ont exploré les différentes installations de l’Université Laval, découvrant un environnement d’apprentissage stimulant et innovant. En après-midi, ils ont été chaleureusement accueillis au Centre multi-services MAMUK, où un repas convivial et des activités ludiques les attendaient, créant ainsi une ambiance propice aux échanges et au partage. Ces moments de détente ont permis de renforcer les liens entre les élèves et les intervenants, tout en leur offrant une pause bien méritée après deux journées intenses de découvertes scientifiques.

La troisième et dernière journée a été marquée par une immersion dans les laboratoires du LOEX, spécialisés dans la reconstruction des tissus par génie tissulaire. Ce fut une expérience unique pour les élèves, qui ont pu observer divers types de tissus créés grâce à cette technologie de pointe. Ils ont également eu la chance de participer à des activités pratiques, en manipulant des cultures cellulaires et en apprenant des techniques scientifiques sous la supervision d’experts passionnés. Cette immersion a permis aux élèves de découvrir de près le domaine fascinant de la médecine régénérative et de mieux comprendre les enjeux et les perspectives liés au génie tissulaire.

Nous tenons à remercier chaleureusement toutes les personnes impliquées dans l’organisation de ce séjour et dans l’accueil des élèves. Grâce à votre engagement et à votre dévouement, ces trois journées ont été une véritable réussite, offrant aux élèves une opportunité unique de s’immerger dans le monde de la recherche et de nourrir leur intérêt pour les sciences. Nous espérons que cette expérience inspirera de futures vocations et continuera de renforcer les liens entre les communautés autochtones et le monde scientifique.

We are excited to share the highlights of an unforgettable experience that took place last January as part of the Chercheur d’un jour program. We had the honor of welcoming five students, accompanied by their science teacher and the principal of the Jimmy Sandy Memorial School, from the community of Kawawachikamach. This three-day visit offered them the opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of scientific research at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval Research Center (CRCHU) and various laboratories at Université Laval.

The first day of their visit began with an immersive tour of our facilities at CRCHU, where the students explored our neuroscience laboratories, as well as those specializing in biomaterials and biomedical devices. This initial experience allowed them to better understand the technological and scientific advancements in the field of biomedical research. In the afternoon, the students worked on their science projects in preparation for the Expo-Science Autochtone-Québec. They were guided in various laboratories affiliated with Université Laval, including the Radioecology Laboratory, led by Professor Dominic Larivière, and the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF). This was a rich learning experience, sparking their curiosity and passion for science.

On the second day, the students had the unique opportunity to meet with Senator Michelle Audette, a member of the Innu community of Uashat mak Mani-utenam. They also exchanged ideas with students from the Université Laval Indigenous Student Association, fostering intercultural dialogue and enriching discussions about their respective paths and experiences. This meeting was a true source of inspiration for our young guests. Following this, they toured the various facilities at Université Laval, discovering a stimulating and innovative learning environment. In the afternoon, they were warmly welcomed at the MAMUK Multi-Service Center, where they enjoyed a meal and participated in fun activities, creating a friendly atmosphere for interaction and sharing. These moments of relaxation helped strengthen the bonds between the students and the program staff while offering a well-deserved break after two intense days of scientific discovery.

The third and final day was marked by an immersion in the LOEX laboratories, which specialize in tissue reconstruction through tissue engineering. This unique experience allowed the students to observe various types of tissues created through this advanced technology. They also had the opportunity to take part in hands-on activities, working with cell cultures and learning scientific techniques under the guidance of passionate experts. This immersion provided the students with a close-up view of the fascinating field of regenerative medicine, deepening their understanding of the challenges and possibilities in tissue engineering.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in organizing this visit and in welcoming the students. Your commitment and dedication made these three days a true success, offering the students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of research and nurture their interest in science. We hope that this experience will inspire future vocations and continue to strengthen the bonds between Indigenous communities and the scientific world.
